–Chemistry teacher Phil Stein has been named the AHS Class of 1979 Excellence in Teaching Award winner for the 2020-2021 school-year.

Stein was presented the award during a ceremony Tuesday afternoon, following the last day of school for the Algona District. Stein received multiple nominations this year, and has been nominated previously for the award.

One nomination came from a student who stated that Stein “Even through COVID, he made his classes educational and enjoyable. His class over Zoom felt the most normal to me.”

Stein receives a plaque for public display in the Administration Office, an engraved commemorative school bell and $200.

The Algona High School Class of 1979 decided at their 20-year reunion to create an Excellence in Teaching award, which they asked the Algona Community School Foundation to administer. Members of the community nominate current teachers for the recognition, and then a committee reviews the nominations and selects the Teacher of the Year.

This was Stein’s last chance at the award, as he is one of the teachers retiring from the district this year.
