Medical Episode Suspected in Weekend Crash Near Fenton

–A Minnesota woman reported only minor injuries following a 1-vehicle accident over the 4th of July weekend near Fenton.

According to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department, 62-year-old Pamela Mikkalson of Eagan, Minnesota was westbound on County Road B14, around 3 miles NW of Fenton just before midnight on July 4th. The 2008 Saturn Wagon that Mikkalson was driving left the roadway to the right, then crossed the roadway to the left and entered the south ditch.

Mikkalson told Deputies she was traveling from Minneapolis to Sioux City and appeared to be disoriented. After a brief investigation it was determined Mikkalson was having a possible diabetic episode, and she was taken to Kossuth Regional Health Center by Fenton Ambulance for observation.

Damage to Mikkalson’s vehicle was estimated at $5,000. No citations were issued.

Local Athletic Schedule and Results for the Week of 7/6-7/12

It’s the final full week of the 2020 Iowa high school baseball and softball season. 1A and 2A baseball district pairings and all softball regional pairings were released last week. This week,  3A baseball district pairings will be released as teams across the state prepare for the postseason. For a schedule of this week’s athletic events for area schools and Hometown Radio’s broadcast schedule, see below.

Monday, July 6th:

  • Algona baseball vs. Webster City, 5:30 p.m. on Hometown Radio, 92.7 FM.
    • Webster City beats Algona 15-5 in five innings. The Lynx scored three runs in the first inning, seven in the third, and five more in the fifth inning. After falling behind 10-0, the Bulldogs scored five runs over a two-inning span, but Webster City immediately pushed the lead back to 10 to end the game early. Aaron Weringa went 2-3 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • North Union softball at Newman Catholic, 7:30 p.m.
    • Newman Catholic beats North Union 4-3. The Knights lead 4-0 after five innings before the Warriors scored three times in the sixth inning, but they couldn’t push across the tying run. Hope Steinberger went 2-4 with a double while Olivia VonBank went 1-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. The Warriors committed three errors defensively, which led to three unearned runs being charged to starting pitcher Emily Meyer.
  • North Union baseball vs. Pocahontas Area, 7:30 p.m.
    • Pocahontas Area beats North Union 9-1. Both teams scored a run in the first innings, then the Indians scored four times in the third, three times in the fifth, and once more in the seventh inning. Brendan Anderson singled, walked twice, and scored a run, while Braden Pierce doubled and drove Anderson in for the Warriors’ only run of the game.
  • West Bend-Mallard baseball at Spirit Lake, 7:30 p.m.
    • Spirit Lake beats West Bend-Mallard 12-2 in six innings. After a scoreless first, Spirit Lake scored in each of the next six innings, pushing across one in the second, four in the third, three in the fourth, and two in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Wolverines scored single runs in both the third and fourth frames, but it wasn’t enough.

Tuesday, July 7th:

  • Bishop Garrigan softball vs. Algona, 6:00 p.m. on Hometown Radio, 92.7 FM.
    • Algona beats Bishop Garrigan 9-2. Algona led the entire game, scoring two runs in the first and four more in the third frame. Bishop Garrigan scored single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, but the Bulldogs responded with two in the sixth and another in the seventh. Moriah Knapp went 3-4 with two runs and an RBI. Ashlin Young singled three rimes and drove in a run for Algona. Emma Fogarty walked a sored a run for the Golden Bears on their Senior Night.
  • North Union softball vs. Graettinger-Terrill/Ruthven-Ayrshire, 6:00 p.m.
    • North Union beats Graettinger-Terrill/Ruthven-Ayrshire 5-1. Trailing 1-0 after five innings, the Warriors scored five rune in the sixth inning to take the lead and eventually win the game. Cassie Beadle and Sam Nielson both picked up two hits for North Union in support of Emily Meyer, who allowed just one run on fie hits in seven innings pitched.
  • Bishop Garrigan baseball vs. Algona, 7:30 p.m.
    • Algona beats Bishop Garrigan 11-0 in five innings. The Bulldogs scored in four of five offensive innings, including four-run second and fifth innings. Six different Bulldogs recorded a single hit to support Cameren Rindone, who didn’t allow a run and limited the Golden Bears to just one hit: a Marcus Plathe single.
  • North Union baseball vs. Northwood-Kensett, 7:30 p.m.
    • Northwood-Kensett beats North Union 7-6. North Union led 3-0 early, but then Northwood-Kensett scored seven-unanswered runs to take a four-run lead. The Warriors scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh, but couldn’t tie the game up late. Five different Warriors recorded a hit, including Noah Morphew, who singled, walked, drove in a run and scored two runs for North Union.
  • West Bend-Mallard baseball at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, 7:30 p.m.
    • Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn beats West Bend-Mallard 6-3. The Wolverines trailed 4-2 and got back within one run by scoring once in the sixth inning, but Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn scored two more times in the bottom of the sixth to build a three-run lead, which they held. Nolan Blair went 3-4 with an RBI, while Hunter Buhs doubled and scored a run for the Wolverines.

Wednesday, July 8th:

  • Bishop Garrigan softball vs. Webster City, 6:00 p.m.
    • Webster City beats Bishop Garrigan 4-3. The Golden Bears scored first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Lynx tied the game in the second, then took a lead with a three-run fifth frame. Bishop Garrigan scored single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn’t push across the tying run. Emma Fogarty went 1-3 with two RBIs, while Mackenzie Meister had a hit in four at-bats, drove in and scored a run.
  • West Bend-Mallard softball at South Central Calhoun, 7:00 p.m.
    • West Bend-Mallard beats South Central Calhoun 5-3. South Central Calhoun led after a two-run first inning, then the Wolverines scored four times in the fourth and added a single run in the fifth for insurance. Kylee Brosh was 3-4 with a run scored for West Bend-Mallard.
  • Algona softball vs. Iowa Falls-Alden, 7:30 p.m.
    • Algona beats Iowa Falls-Alden 3-1. The game was tied 0-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning before Kam Etherington hit a go-ahead three-run home run. She finished 3-3 at the plate and earned the save, getting the final six outs while allowing one unearned run on one hit. She threw in relief of Ashlin young, who allowed no runs on just two hits in five innings to earn the victory.
  • Algona baseball vs. Iowa Falls-Alden, 7:30 p.m. on Hometown Radio, 92.7 FM.
    • Algona beats Iowa Falls-Alden 13-3 in five innings. Algona scored in four of their five offensive innings, including a four-run fourth inning and a game-ending, five-run fifth inning. All five Algona runs in the fifth were unearned thanks to numerous Iowa Falls-Alden errors. Tyler Manske and Miles Goche both picked up three hits while Cameren Rindone and Jensen Eischen had two hits for the Bulldogs. Garrett Goche allowed three unearned runs on thee hits in five innings pitched to pick up his first win of the season.
  • Bishop Garrigan baseball at Estherville-Lincoln Central, 7:30 p.m.
    • Bishop Garrigan beats Estherville-Lincoln Central 8-4. The Golden Bears scored seven of their eight runs in the first two innings and led the entire game.

Thursday, July 9th:

  • Bishop Garrigan softball at Estherville-Lincoln Central, 4:30 p.m.
    • Estherville-Lincoln Central beats Bishop Garrigan 8-3. The Midgets scored in their first five offensive innings, including a three-run fifth inning that increased their lead from two runs to five runs.
  • North Union softball at Newell-Fonda, 7:00 p.m.
    • Newell-Fonda beats North Union 3-1. The Mustangs scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and held the lead the rest of the game. Sam Nielsen went 2-3 with a run scored for North Union, while Emily Meyer allowed three runs on nine hits in six innings.
  • West Bend-Mallard softball at Emmetsburg, 7:00 p.m.
    • Emmetsburg beats West Bend-Mallard 11-1 in five innings. The Wolverines scored in four of their five offensive innings, including four times in the second and three times in both the fourth and fifth frames to end the game early.
  • Algona baseball vs. Newman Catholic, 7:30 p.m.
    • Newman Catholic beats Algona 11-5. The game was tied at five after five innings, but then the Knights scored two runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh inning to pull away from the Bulldogs, who got two hits from both Wyatt Streit and Brandon Steil, who also scored two runs.
  • Bishop Garrigan baseball at Humboldt, 7:30 p.m.
    • Humboldt beats Bishop Garrigan 9-6. Bishop Garrigan took a lead with a two-run top of the first inings, but the Wildcats answered with three runs in the bottom of the first. Humboldt eventually built a 9-3 lead. The Golden Bears scored three times in the top of the seventh, but couldn’t get any closer. Colby Grabes and Isaiah Byrkeland both picked up two hits for Bishop Garrigan in the loss.

Friday, July 10th:

  • Bishop Garrigan softball at Newman Catholic, 7:00 p.m. on Hometown Radio, 92.7 FM.
    • Newman Catholic beats Bishop Garrigan 14-13. The Golden Bears led 3-0, 6-0, 9-1, 12-7, and 13-8, but the Knights fought all the way back, scoring five times in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. After holding the Golden Bears scoreless in the top of the eighth, Newman Catholic scored once in the bottom of the inning to walk off. Bishop Garrigan has 16 hits, including four by Amanda Miller, and three each by Maddie Meister, Mackenzie Meister, and Aubree Altman.
  • North Union softball at Manson-Northwest Webster, 7:00 p.m.
    • North Union beats Manson-Northwest Webster 12-1. The Warriors scored in six of their seven offensive innings, including a four-run fifth and a three-run seventh. Hope Steinberger had four hits, while Sam Nielsen and Olivia VonBank each picked up three hits in support of Emily Meyer, who allowed just one run on five hits in six innings.
  • Algona softball vs. Spencer, 7:30 p.m.
    • Algona beats Spencer 2-0. The Bulldogs scored the game’s only runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Moriah Knapp singled for Algona’s lone hit of the game. Emma Elsbecker and Ashlin Young scored a run each, while Young and Laura Wegner each drove in a run. Kam Etherington allowed just one hit in seven innings with 15 strikeouts and no walks.

Saturday, July 11th:

  • North Union baseball district quarterfinal vs. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in Garner, 4:30 p.m.
    • Clarion-Goldfield-Dows beats North Union 12-7 in nine innings. The Warriors led 2-0 after three innings, then the Cowboys scored once in the fourth and two more times in fifth to take a lead. They added four runs runs in the top of the seventh to build a 7-2 advantage before North Union rallied for five runs in the bottom half to force extras. After a scoreless eighth inning, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows scored five times in the ninth and the Warriors couldn’t rally again. Noah Morphew and Brendan Anderson both had three hits while Braden Pierce picked up two singles and drove in two runs. The loss ends North Union’s season at 1-10.
  • Bishop Garrigan baseball district quarterfinal at Graettinger-Terrill/Ruthven-Ayrshire in Ruthven, 7:00 p.m. on Hometown Radio, 92.7 FM.
    • Bishop Garrigan beats Graettinger-Terrill/Ruthven-Ayrshire 3-1. The Golden Bears didn’t record a hit until the seventh inning, but picked up two unearned runs in the second inning thanks to three Titan errors. Marcus Plathe singled and Garrett Heying doubled him in for the team’s only two hits in the seventh to give the Golden Bears an insurance run. Plathe allowed just two hits in 6 2/3 innings pitched, allowing one run while striking out nine. Andrew Arndorfer picked up the one-out save for the Golden Bears, who move on to Tuesday’s district semifinal against Alta-Aurelia.
  • West Bend-Mallard baseball district quarterfinal at Newell-Fonda, 7:00 p.m.
    • Newell-Fonda beats West Bend-Mallard 12=1 in five innings. The Mustangs scored three runs in the first and eight more in the second to end the game early. Nolan Blair and Thomas Fehr both singled for the Wolverines’ lone hits. West Bend-Mallard’s season ends with a record of 1-11.

Sunday, July 12th:

IGHSAU Releases Regional Brackets for 2020 Softball Postseason

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released full regional brackets for the 2020 softball postseason Thursday morning. Algona, Bishop Garrigan, North Union, and West Bend-Mallard now know what stands between them and a trip to the state tournament in Fort Dodge.

Class 1A – Region 1

West Bend-Mallard Wolverines

  • West Bend-Mallard will start their 2020 postseason run on the road against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Monday, July 13th at 7:00 p.m. If the Wolverines win on Monday, they would then play River Valley on Wednesday in the region’s quarterfinal round. The other teams in this region are Akron-Westfield (the region’s top seed), Harris-Lake Park, Trinity Christian, Graettinger-Terrill/Ruthven-Ayrshire, St. Edmond, Remsen St. Mary’s, MMCRU, Kinglsey-Pierson, Gehlen Catholic, and Woodbury Central.

Class 1A – Region 4

Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears

  • Bishop Garrigan is the No. 1 seed in Region 4 and will open their postseason on Wednesday, July 15th at 7:00 p.m. at home against the winner of Monday’s opening-round game between North Butler and Rockford in the regional quarterfinals. The other teams in this region are , Newman Catholic (the region’s No. 2 seed), Turkey Valley, Northwood-Kensett, North Iowa, Riceville, St. Ansgar, West Central, Nashua-Plainfield, Kee, and South Winneshiek.

Class 2A – Region 5

North Union Warriors

  • North Union will begin their postseason slate on Wednesday, July 15th at 7:00 p.m. against Lake Mills at Central Springs. If the Warriors win, they would advance to the region’s semifinals and would play the winner of the Central Springs (the region’s top seed) and West Hancock quarterfinal game. The other teams in this region are Emmetsburg, South Central Calhoun, East Sac County, Manson-Northwest Webster, and Pocahontas Area.

Class 3A – Region 6

Algona Bulldogs

  • Algona’s 2020 postseason  will start on Wednesday, July 15th at 7:00 p.m. against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura at home. If the Bulldogs win, they would play the winner of Forest City and Clear Lake on Friday, July 17th in the regional semifinals. The other teams in this region are Crestwood (the region’s second seed), Waukon, New Hampton, and North Fayette Valley.

IHSAA Releases 1A and 2A District and Substate Pairings for 2020 Baseball Postseason

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released Class 1A and 2A brackets for the 2020 baseball postseason early Wednesday afternoon. Bishop Garrigan, North Union, and West Bend-Mallard now know what lies between them and a trip to the state tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines.

Class 1A – District 2

Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears

  • Bishop Garrigan is the No. 5 seed in District 2 and will open their postseason slate against Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Saturday, July 11th at 4:30 p.m. The other teams in District 2 are Alta/Aurelia (the district’s No. 1 seed), Storm Lake St. Mary’s, Newell-Fonda, West Bend-Mallard, Harris-Lake Park, and Ridge View.
  • The winner of District 2 will play the winner of District 1 in Substate 1 on Tuesday, July 21st at 7:00 p.m. with a spot at state up for grabs.

West Bend-Mallard Wolverines

  • West Bend-Mallard is the No. 7 seed in District 2 and will open their postseason slate on the road against Newell-Fonda, the second seed in District 2, on Saturday, July 11th at 7:00 p.m. The other teams in District 2 are the same teams as listed above.
  • The winner of District 2 will play the winner of District 1 in Substate 1 on Tuesday, July 21st at 7:00 p.m. with a spot at state up for grabs.

North Union Warriors

  • North Union is the No. 1 seed in District 3 will open their postseason run against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in Garner on Saturday, July 11th at 7:00 p.m. The other teams in District 3 are Pocahontas Area (the district’s top seed), Forest City, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, and Emmetsburg.
  • The winner of District 4 will play the winner of District 3 in Substate 2 on Tuesday, July 21st at 7:00 p.m. with a spot at state up for grabs.
