Tuesday’s Area Scoreboard: Golden Bears Pick Up Huge Conference Victories

Bishop Garrigan 52

Bishop Garrigan immediately jumped out to an 11 point first quarter lead, but saw the Cardinals chip away throughout the game.  After the Golden Bears re-established a double digit lead during the fourth quarter, the Cardinals went on a run to trim the deficit to one point.  Angelo Winkel converted four clutch foul shots down the stretch to finish with 28 points and help put the game away.  Bishop Garrigan was also boosted by 10 points from senior Kyle Schaaf in his first game back from injury.  Senior Kevin Myers led the Cardinals with 20 points in the loss.  The Golden Bears improved to 10-4 overall, 8-3 in Top of Iowa West games, while Garner Hayfield Ventura dropped to 12-4 overall, 10-3 in the conference.  Up next for Bishop Garrigan is a game against Pocahontas Valley on Thursday, while Garner Hayfield Ventura hosts Lake Mills on Friday.

Algona dropped their 2nd game in a row after starting with a 5-0 conference record.  The game was close most of the night, as it was tied at halftime, and the Wildcats led by one going into the fourth, but Humboldt closed the game on a 19-8 run to finish it out. Algona travels to Hampton Dumont-CAL on Thursday.

-32 minutes of basketball weren’t enough to decide the outcome of this game, as the North Union Warriors fell to the Belmond-Klemme Broncos in overtime.  Despite trailing almost the entire game, the Broncos rallied to tie it in the 4th quarter, then scored all ten overtime points to take the win.  Gage Madden had 25 in the loss for the Warriors.

The Golden Bears built an 18 point halftime lead, and were able to withstand a big, 17-6, Cardinal run in the fourth quarter to finish off the win.  Sophmore Molly Joyce led the game with 20 points, and fellow sophomore Audi Crooks posted 19 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Kaylyn Meyers played a strong all around game with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.  Junior Chloe Frank had 18 points, and senior Jayden Frank chipped in 13 for the Cardinals.   Up next for Bishop Garrigan is a trip to North Union on Friday.
