–The Bishop Garrigan Football program will be dropping down to the 8-Man ranks for the 2021 season. The Garrigan School Board recently approved the drop from 11-Man to 8-Man football for the next cycle from the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Head Coach Marty Wadle says declining enrollment numbers make it difficult the safely field an 11-man team.
Wadle says all of the players in the Bishop Garrigan program have played some 8-Man football at the lower levels.
Athletic Director Rob Meister says that the decision to drop down is for the next football cycle, and they will reassess where the program should be down the road without making any permanent changes from a facilities standpoint.
For classification purposes, the IAHSAA lists Bishop Garrigan’s enrollment in grades 9-11 as 107 for the 2020-2021 school year. Any school with an enrollment number of 115 or lower is eligible to play 8-Man football.
