No Injuries After Trailer Strikes Overhead Bridge

–No injuries were reported when a semi failed to clear an overhead railroad bridge earlier this month in Northern Kossuth County.

According to a report released this week by the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, 43-year-old Matthew Jones of Monroe, Iowa was traveling north on 140th Avenue in a semi owned by Vortex Enterprises of Prairie City, Iowa around 3 PM on Sunday, November 8th. As Jones approached the intersection with HWY 9, he encountered an overhead railroad bridge that his vehicle was unable to safely go underneath.

The trailer he was hauling struck the steel and wood frame under the railroad tracks, damaging the top of the truck.

The accident report states that there is no signage as you approach the bridge from the south alerting the driver to a low clearance ahead.

Damage to the trailer was estimated at $10,000 while damage to the bridge was estimated at $100.

The accident report also states that Union Pacific did have a bridge foreman inspect the bridge following the accident.
