IHSAA Releases District and Substate Brackets for 2020 Basketball Postseason

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released district and substate brackets for Classes 1A and 2A last week. The postseason slates for Algona, Bishop Garrigan, North Union, and West Bend-Mallard are now set as teams begin the push to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Class 3A – Substate 2

Algona Bulldogs

  • Algona, the second-highest ranked seeded team in the substate, begins its race to Des Moines on Monday, Feb. 24th at 8:00 p.m. at home against Hampton-Dumont-CAL. If Algona can win the all-Bulldogs matchup, they’d then play the winner of Ballard and Webster City at home on Thursday, Feb. 27th. No. 15* Clear Lake, the substate’s top seed and the North Central Conference champion, sits atop the bracket alongside Boone, Humboldt, and Iowa Falls-Alden. The substate final is set for Monday, March 2nd in Webster City, but the location is subject to change.

Class 2A – District 3

North Union Warriors

  • North Union opens its 2020 postseason slate on the road against Sioux Central on Monday, Feb. 17 at 8:00 p.m. If the Warriors are to win on Monday, they’ll then play Emmetsburg — who has a first-round bye — in Hull on Thursday, Feb. 20 in a district semifinal. No. 2* Boyden-Hull is the top-ranked team in the district and they’ll play the winner of Sheldon-Pocahontas Area in the other semifinal. 2A District 4 is led by No. 4* Western Christian. The winner of District 3 and District 4 will meet in 2A Substate 2 with the winner moving on to the state tournament.

Class 1A – District 2

Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears

  • No. 4* Bishop Garrigan is the 1A District 2 top seed and begins their chase for a second-straight state tournament appearance at home on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 8:00 p.m. against either Storm Lake St. Mary’s or West Bend-Mallard, who play on Monday, Feb. 17 in a play-in game. St. Edmond and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire battle in the other quarterfinal on the top half of the bracket, while No. 8* Newell-Fonda leads the bottom half of the district, along with Paton-Churdan, Harris-Lake Park, and Glidden-Ralston. The District 2 winner will play the District 1 champion (which is led by No. 3* South O’Brien) in 1A Substate 1.

West Bend-Mallard Wolverines

  • West Bend-Mallard begins its 2020 postseason journey on Monday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m. on the road against Storm Lake St. Mary’s. If the Wolverines win, they’d then travel to Algona to play the district’s top seed, No. 4* Bishop Garrigan on Thursday, Jan. 20 in a district quarterfinal. St. Edmond and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire battle in the other quarterfinal on the top half of the bracket, while No. 8* Newell-Fonda leads the bottom half of the district, along with Paton-Churdan, Harris-Lake Park, and Glidden-Ralston. The District 2 winner will play the District 1 champion (which is led by No. 3* South O’Brien) in 1A Substate 1.
